I'm sure it doesn't come as a shock to anyone that the nonprofit sector has been adversely impacted on a massive scale due to the effects of the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic. Not only has there been a significant decrease in resources and donations, but a massive increase in demand for assistance with the colossal amount of layoffs and loss of income globally.
Soon it will be #GivingTuesday2020. #GivingTuesday is celebrated annually on the first Tuesday after Thanksgiving. It was started in New York City in 2012 and has grown into a "global generosity movement". Giving Tuesday strives to create a world in which generosity is at the center and resognates around the world through kind gestures. Whether or not it's helping a neighbor, doing something nice for a stranger or helping a local charity, there is something that everyone can do.
R2M Realty was created with an initiative to give back 3% of our commission to our residential clients' local charities of choice. It is my belief that since the monies from commissions are generated locally, some of it should go back into the local community... kind of like the circle of life. You receive, you give. With #GivingTuesday 2020 being one day away, I thought it would be a great idea to highlight some of our most popular local charity give back recipients from the past 7 years. If you are looking for a way to participate in the movement, please consider a donation of time, money and/or supplies to one of our top 10 recipients (In alphabetical order). Your generosity would be greatly appreciated by me and the people who need these resources. Kindness is contageous. Let's all catch it and spread it. Today, Tomorrow and Always.
Baking Memories for Kids, founded by Frank Spero in 2012. Frank was inspired to start Baking Memories after a life altering battle with cancer. The charity bakes delicious chocolate chip cookies that are sold to raise monies to send terminally ill children and their families on an all expense paid vacation to all of the Florida theme parks. "I know that these vacations will never erase the ordeals that these families have endured, but maybe for just a moment they will be able to put aside those thoughts and focus on the joy of living and create some positive memories like those that sustained me through my own cancer battle.", Spero says of his mission.
How You Can Help:
This time of year Baking Memories looks for volunteers to assist in baking and packaging cookies to be sold. It is a great event to participate in and one you can do with your teens.
Host your very own BM Bake Sale
The delicious cookies can be purchased from the BM website and make excellent gifts for the holidays. Talk about a win-win!
With every dollar donated, a memory is created.

Homes for Heroes was our first official give back recipient. It's mission is to build and operate homes for honorary discharged homeless vets. After giving much of their lives protecting and serving our great country, retired mlitary service men and women shouldn't have to come home and have to worry about where they will lay their heads at night.
Homes for heroes has an immediate need for $400,000 to "cover pre-construction costs, including engineering studies, architectural fees and site preparation." based on the Homes for Heroes Rockland official website, they are $31000 from their goal. To help out, you can click here to make a donation
The Marisa Fund was created by David Goldwasser, who lost his young daughter, Marisa due to cancer. "The Marisa Fund raises money for research, treatment and care of pediatric cancer patients. As a partner of the Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation, TMF finances research to find less toxic treatment protocols so medical institutions can kill the cancer, not the patient."
The Rockland County Road Runners just concluded it's annual 5K Turkey Trot for 2020 for the Marisa Fund. This year the Turkey Trot was conducted virtually and is Rockland County's largest Road Race. You may have just missed the trot, but you can still donate to the Marisa Fund by clicking here.
Meals on Wheels was founded in 1974. It addressed the need for home delivered meals in Rockland County. A lot of our aging seniors and disabled are not able to go out for food resources, let alone cook for themselves. Meals on Wheels makes sure that they don't go unfed. The organization has also established a pet pantry for seniors who can't afford to fed their pets.
How You Can Help:
Meals on Wheels provides lots of opportunities for volunteers to assist in delivering meals to those in need. With Covid, the organization has lost a lot of volunteers and can use some helping hands. This is another great one to do with the kids to begin to get them involved with giving back to their local community.
Blizzard Boxes are prepared and given to the homebound to provide a sufficient supply of non-perishable foods in case of emergencies. Assembling Blizzard boxes is a great community service project for the family or for your scouts.
The Nyack Center is one of my personal favorites, as when I think back to the things that adversely impacted me when I was a kid, I ofter think that if my brother and I had a community center like the Nyack Center to be a part of, maybe some things would have turned out differently. The Nyack Center was founded in 1990 and provides meals, educational and recreational programs to the children and family of the Nyacks and Greater Rockland County.
How You Can Help:
When there are kids, there is always a need and a way to assist. Contact the Nyack Center to see how you can be of service.
